Clay work

I started using clay because I knew it would create much better effects compared to using just card and paper. I started by making slabs and making sure they were level and smooth ready to be worked into. In order to work into them, the clay needed to be a bit more tough so I had to leave it a day. The next day when I came back to the clay I started to look at what I had already done with the collage:

I then used various clay tools and anything that was lying around to create shapes and imprints in the clay. To create dimention I cut into some of the clay a bit deeper and even added on other bits of clay. To stick these bits of clay on I had to use slip(made of clay and water). The different textures will create interesting shadows when light is reflected off it. On some of the slabs I created windows which gave it a bit more character and sense of age. I had to stick two pieces of clay together so that they would stand up like in the picture above. To do this I rolled up a bit of wet clay and used slip to stick the two edges together. I made sure that the bottom was completely flat so that it would stand up on its own. I didn't keep the top flat on some of the pieces as it made them looked more aged which fits in with my old/new theme. To concentrate on the new I ended up cutting out skyscraper shapes from one side of the clay so it looks as if it is going into the distance. This gave the piece even more dimention. Overall, I wanted a final piece that had texture and showed old and new and I thought clay would give the right effect for this.

Experimenting

To experiment I found some pictures of old and new windows because I can show this easily through windows. I used tracing paper, like Silverwood, to trace the windows. I traced them so I could use Silverwoods method and so I can put pictures of other windows behind it. This made it more realistic as when you look out of a window in the city there is bound to be another building opposite you.
Cutting out three buildings from black card and then putting some of the tracings of windows behind it. I also put some pictures of windows, which I printed out on tracing paper, behind the drawn windows. I did this so it looks like there are actual buildings in the background. This gave it a translucent effect.

I then went on Photoshop and edited the pictures. I used curves and adjusted the brightness and contrast. This made some of the windows in the back emerge.
